Depending
on each ceramic system and fabrication method various properties can
be tailored to meet specific aesthetic or mechanical expectations.
All ceramic systems can be safely used for the construction of
single-tooth ceramic restorations (veneers, inlays, onlays, full
crowns) with aesthetics being the most dominant factor in selecting
the appropriate ceramic system, since the longevity of these ceramic
restorations is comparable to conventional metal-ceramic
restorations. Silica-based and feldspathic ceramics present higher
translucency, while alumina and zirconia ceramics can be used in
cases where opacity is desirable, such as in cases of discolored
teeth or teeth with non-aesthetic cast posts/cores.
